Minnesota Council of Churches Director Receives Distinguished Alumni/ae Award
The Reverend Peg Chemberlin—executive director of the Minnesota Council of Churches and president-elect of the National Council of Churches of Christ, USA—has been named as a Distinguished Alumna of United Theological Seminary. She received her award during the seminary’s annual Alumni/ae Banquet on Wednesday, April 23rd.
Rev. Chemberlin graduated from United Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree in 1982. She was ordained a deacon in the Moravian Church that same year and holds dual standing with the United Church of Christ. She served as Director of Campus Ministries for St. Cloud State University from 1982-88, also working as an adjunct professor in their department of human relations. She directed the Minnesota FoodShare program of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches from 1988-1995 before assuming her current position with the Minnesota Council of Churches.
A recipient of Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson’s award for Women of Excellence in 1994, Chemberlin was recognized for extraordinary personal achievement, for support of others in their pursuit of excellence, and for ongoing contributions to the State of Minnesota. Other awards include the Angel of Reconciliation award from Unity Baptist Church, St. Paul and the NOVA Peace and Justice Award while at St. Cloud State University.
Rev. Chemberlin’s peers sing her praises. The Rev. Dr. Gary B. Reierson, president of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches, says of Chemberlin, “Many would regard her as a key voice in the ecumenical movement today. Her passion for social justice and commitment to serving, empowering, and lifting up the poor is inspirational.” The Rev. Katherine Austin Mahle, coordinator of local church resourcing for the MN Annual Conference UMC, notes that “she has used her considerable gifts for ecumenical ministry to develop the MN Council of Churches as one of the premier state councils in the United States.”
United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities is proud to recognize Rev. Peg Chemberlin as a Distinguished Alumna who represents the best of the tradition and commitments United seeks to foster.
