Refugee Family Reunification Applications
More commonly known in refugee communities as “Sponsorship” or “Affidavit of Relationship” (AOR) applications, some refugees and asylees in the United States are eligible to file applications to help family members they left behind access the US Refugee Program. Refugee Services' staff screen for eligibility based on current US law and guidelines and assist file applications, where appropriate. The US government sets eligibility criteria on an annual basis through a presidential determination. The current timeline between time of filing and refugee interviews overseas is approximately 1.5 years, and average time from time of filing until arrival in the United States for application approved is over two years. Staff provides information and follows up on all applications until a decision is reached.
Adjustment of Status
More commonly known as Green Card, refugees and asylees are eligible to file for adjustment of status after they have been in the country for one year. Although refugees are admitted to the US indefinitely, they are required to adjust status to permanent residents after one year. This is an important and necessary step to becoming a US citizen. Refugee Services conducts extensive outreach to ethnic communities to educate them on this process as well as assist them through this process. Weekly group processing sessions utilize interns and volunteers to assist in the processing of these applications. High quality service and follow up is the philosophy of this project which assists clients until they receive their documentation.
Application for Naturalization (Citizenship)
Refugees are eligible to apply for naturalization after they have been in the country for 5 years, and are permanent residents. Refugee Service staff provide individualized assistance to eligible clients to guide them through this process and assist with immigration applications.
Walk-in Hours
Refugee Services hosts weekly walk-in hours at MCC on Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. and at the Hmong American Partnership (HAP) building on Wednesdays from 2-5 p.m. During those time periods, clients can meet briefly with a staff person on immigration matters. Clients are screened and provided advice or referral to best serve their needs.
