The Minnesota Interfaith Darfur Coalition was created by a collaboration of Adath Jeshurun Congregation, Bet Shalom Congregation, Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, Minnesota Council of Churches, and Temple Israel to help end the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Genocide is raging in the Darfur region of western Sudan. Since February 2003, government-sponsored militias known as the Janjaweed have conducted a calculated campaign of slaughter, rape, starvation and displacement. The Sudanese government has failed to protect them. The government not only denies involvement with the massacres, but its police also have attacked displacement camps.
It is estimated that 400,000 people have died due to violence, starvation and disease. More than 2.5 million people have been displaced from their homes and over 200,000 have fled across the border to Chad. Many now live in camps lacking adequate food, shelter, sanitation, and health care. Many more will starve. Refugees face the threat of rape and murder every day.
The Minnesota Interfaith Darfur Coalition has engaged in fundraising, consciousness-raising, and lobbying on behalf of the people of Darfur.
