Category Archives: Support Groups

Of all the types of healing resources available to human beings, social support and social connection seems to be the most powerful in protecting against mental and physical health problems, and in enhancing coping with stress. Social isolation, the lack of feeling connected to people, or lacking trusted people with whom to interact predicts worsened mental and physical health outcomes.

The most important aspect of helpful social support is that individuals trust and feel comfortable being open with people in their social support network. This can be a problem for many people who come from cultures where there has been triabal or factional fighting. Also, people often struggle to trust others in their community if they fear that their private information will not be kept confidential.

Below is a list of some more formal groups that are operating in the metro area that might be helpful to new refugees.

Connecting refugees to these group should be done carefully. Making individual relationships with group leaders or someone in the group may help. Ensuring that there is indeed confidentiality in group proceedings may also help.

Other types of social support can be found through MAAs, community health workers and other community organizations.
