We wanted to share with you a beautiful poem written by one of our church co-sponsorship group leaders. Joy DeHarpporte wrote this poem inspired by the poem “Otherwise” by Jane Kenyon and shared it with her church community as they prepared to welcome a refugee family from Burma last winter.

We want to welcome
a family from a country
many searched to find
on the map. All they need-
lamps, bedding, rice, coats-
is gathered, just as if
this family is our family.
It might have been otherwise.
Christians plan and organize
to greet and care for this
Buddhist Mom, Dad, Son
from earth’s other side,
who have lost their home,
friends, livelihood. It
might have been otherwise.
All these weeks people
do the work they love,
so in this cold month
we can say, “Hello”
to warm a family,
no longer strangers.
It might have been otherwise.
