MINNEAPOLIS – When George Floyd was murdered on camera Minneapolis became the epicenter of America’s new civil rights movement. The subsequent uprising put Minnesotans through a trial that our faith communities had roles in blessing, supporting, healing, and condemning.

It was because of this experience the World Council of Churches asked the Minnesota Council of Churches to create the theme and materials for the 2023 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: to give Christian communities across the world an opportunity to contemplate ways they may be complicit in racial injustice, and to move churches towards justice through reconciliation and unity.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was celebrated across the Northern Hemisphere in January and the Southern Hemisphere in May. Worshipers in Canada, the United Kingdom, Malta, Kenya, India, Australia, and South Africa put themselves in the shoes of BIPOC Minnesotans and found connections between our experiences and their own.

Join us on Monday, October 23 to experience a part of the 2023 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity liturgy, to learn from people around the world what impact celebrating the Week of Prayer had on them, and to hear from the Minnesota faith leaders who designed the liturgy about how truly difficult it was to process their own experiences into liturgical form and steward them through global lenses.
